Fresh groceries always make the best meals. While I enjoy trying new recipes, my favorite comfort meals are the ones that remind me of home. Ones that aren’t concerned with numbers, calories, or measurements. Nothing of the sort. Just how it tastes and how it makes me feel.
A recipe I’m sure more people than I’m aware of have read by now was on the stove tonight. Even in uncertainty and fear, a warm meal that reminds me of all that my dad has taught me so far brings me a quieter mind than I’ve had in what feels like weeks.
As I sit to enjoy my meal, one of my first bites has me discovering a lemon seed! On a night with less on my mind during creation would have maybe prevented it, but it was a welcome surprise. During one of my last bites, another lemon seed. As I stare at it, I think of something I once told my dad when I first moved into the Tower.
“I would love to get a clementine tree! Wouldn’t that be beautiful, in the midst of the concrete jungle? A clementine tree in the living room!” I had done some research, and while it was indeed possible, it wouldn’t be an easy task.
The next time my parents flew West to visit my sister and my brother-in-law, my dad brought clementine seeds back East. In his retirement, he had been enjoying his time playing tennis and his green thumb. He planted two. Each day, he moves the planter to follow the sun, and he sends us photos as it sprouts.
There are things in this life that money can buy, of course. However, I know one of those trees is for me, and the other is for my sister.
One little girl with attitude to the max!
One little girl, soft and dainty!
Those clementine trees are something that no amount of money on earth could buy. I hope it continues to grow long after I am gone, and I hope it will bear fruit for my children and their children, too.
